Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide after heart disease, accounting for nearly one in six deaths in 2020. Despite significant advances, the detectors used in modern radiation therapy treatment face numerous technical and practical challenges that impede effective therapy and increase risks to patients. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the X-MiND project will design and fabricate a novel extremely compact, real-time, dynamic and highly sensitive X-ray/H+ (proton) micro/nano scintillating detector to address these challenges. A nanometric scintillating detector targeting high-resolution local 2D chemical mapping of a material will also be demonstrated.
