Immunology at the heart of Europe: a look back at the June 12 conference in BrusselsOn

June 12, 2025, Mission Europe pour la Recherche took part in a major European event dedicated to immunology, co-organized by the Marseille Immunology Biocluster (MIB), the InFLAMES program (University of Turku, Finland), and the European Commission.

This conference marked an important step in the structuring of immunology as a strategic discipline for the future of life sciences.

The MIB and InFLAMES bioclusters shared their experience of ecosystems bringing together researchers, clinicians, industry and start-ups. This model fosters the transition from fundamental research to concrete applications for patients. It has proved particularly relevant in meeting the challenges of innovation in healthcare, particularly in immunology.

Two round tables enabled participants to address key issues:

  • Delays in drug development, requiring regulatory changes and the future "EU Biotech Act" strategy;
  • Insufficient R&D funding in Europe, calling for the creation of instruments dedicated to medical innovation;
  • The complexity of clinical trials, hampered by fragmented regulation on a European scale;
  • The fragmentation of research in immunology, and the need to federate players to build a common vision;
  • The lack of attractiveness to private European investors, threatening the EU's technological sovereignty in the face of non-European takeovers;
  • The importance of training the new generation of researchers in innovation, regulation and entrepreneurship;
  • And finally, the indispensable role of fundamental research, the matrix of major therapeutic advances such as monoclonal antibodies.

Mission Europe pour la Recherche supports the Marseille Immunology Biocluster in its bid to become a key player in the European biotechnology landscape, and

our ambition is clear: to make immunology a strategic priority for health research in Europe. The June 12 conference was just the beginning: discussions continue, projects gather pace, and more content will be released soon

.📢 Stay tuned, and join us in taking European research further.
